Cape Town & The Cape Winelands

There are very few cities in the world that can genuinely compete with Cape Town for setting. The Atlantic Ocean on one side, the Indian Ocean on the other, and Table Mountain rising dramatically above it all, a flat-topped landmark so iconic that it has come to define the city beneath it. Cape Town is a destination that rewards every kind of traveller, and one that pairs naturally with a safari in a way that few other cities in the world can match. It is, quite simply, one of the great travel experiences on the continent.

Escape in the Cape

Cape Town itself offers an exceptional range of experiences. The most famous being a visit to Table Mountain, which is accessible by cable car or on foot, and offers views over the Cape Peninsula. A close second would be visiting Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for eighteen years of his twenty-seven year imprisonment, which is one of the most significant historical sites in Africa and a profoundly moving experience for anyone with an interest in South Africa’s story.

The city’s food scene is world-class, its beaches are beautiful, and the diversity of its neighbourhoods gives it a texture and energy that rewards slow exploration. The Cape Peninsula and surrounds also offer some of the most unique wildlife encounters in Southern Africa. African penguins at Boulders Beach, southern right whales along the Walker Bay coastline between June and November, and great white sharks in the waters off Gansbaai are encounters that stay with you long after you have left.

For those drawn to wine, food and landscape, the Cape Winelands are essential. The towns of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl sit within one of the most beautiful wine-producing landscapes on earth, with historic Cape Dutch architecture and estates that have been producing wine for over three centuries. Franschhoek in particular has established itself as one of the finest food destinations in Africa.
