We only work in wild places we’re committed to protecting. Here’s what that looks like in practice.

Honest answers to the questions worth asking before you go.

Snow Leopards in India

In Hemis National Park in Ladakh, one of the world’s largest national parks by area, the conditions that make finding a snow leopard possible come together in winter in a way that exists almost nowhere else. This is a serious expedition for a serious wildlife traveller, and it demands the right preparation, the right guides and the right expectations.

Snow Leopard in Hemis National Park

Hemis National Park lies in Ladakh’s cold, arid high country near Leh and covers about 4,400 square kilometres of mountain habitat. It is globally known for snow leopards, but the real depth of the experience comes from the whole landscape: blue sheep on the slopes, thin winter light, and long, thoughtful hours spent glassing the ridgelines.

Some of the most meaningful stays in this region are rooted in village-based Himalayan homestays, developed to support conservation and local livelihoods in Ladakh. These community-led experiences add a dimension to the expedition that goes well beyond the wildlife itself, connecting you to the people and traditions of one of the world’s most remote and remarkable inhabited landscapes.

Done well, a snow leopard expedition in India is not simply about finding the cat. It is about entering the mountains with humility, patience and the right local knowledge, and allowing the landscape to reveal itself on its own terms.

PLANNING YOUR SNOW LEOPARD EXPEDITION WITH ESCAPE SAFARI CO.

The winter months, particularly February and March, offer the strongest conditions for snow leopard sightings, when blue sheep are most visible on the lower slopes and the cats follow them down from the higher ridgelines.

If Hemis is calling, we will advise on timing, altitude, comfort level and how best to approach the search.
