Botswana Safari Guide

The Okavango Delta is Botswana’s ultimate safari attraction. Other highlights include the rolling plains of the Savuti and the elephant-rich Chobe region. Further south of the Delta lies the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. These stretch far and wide, while the grasslands of the Kalahari offer a new type of experience in contrast to the watery Delta. There are many activities to enjoy in Botswana, such as walking with Africa’s first people,

the San, canoeing down the crystal-clear channels of the Okavango, going on game drive, or taking a hot air balloon ride or private helicopter flip over the vast landscape. With some of the most stunning lodges, camps and mobile operations in the country, there is complete flexibility in designing your safari. Accessible by small charter flights or private planes, it is truly remote and untouched.

World's Largest Inland Delta

The Okavango Delta is the world’s largest inland delta. Unlike most deltas that lead to the sea, the Okavango River empties onto open land, flooding the savanna and creating a unique inland delta. In 2014, the Okavango Delta was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its rich biodiversity and unique ecological processes.

Exploring Botswana's Wilderness

More than 17% of this country is devoted to National Parks or Game Reserves. Over 80% of Botswana is part of the immense former desert known as the Kalahari. It is a semi-arid region of grassland or thorn trees where rainfall is erratic and exceeded by evaporation in every month of the year. The Okavango Delta aside, there is no permanent standing water.

San Bushmen

The San people, also known as Bushmen, are considered to be one of the oldest cultures on Earth, with a history that can be traced back over 20,000 years. They traditionally live in the Kalahari Desert, which covers much of Botswana, and are known for their deep knowledge of their harsh environment, including tracking and hunting skills. Their unique “click” languages are among the most complex and oldest known forms of human language.

Diamond Capital of the World

Botswana is one of the world’s largest producers of gem-quality diamonds. The discovery of diamonds in the late 1960s transformed the country from one of the poorest nations in the world to an upper-middle-income economy. Unlike many other nations, Botswana has managed its diamond resources well, investing the proceeds into infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

The breath-taking mountainous region of Damaraland is home to an assortment of desert-adapted wildlife such as elephant, rhino, zebra and lion, which eke out an existence in this near-barren landscape. A not-to-be-missed attraction is the picturesque Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain, which is home to thousands of ancient rock paintings – most notably the White Lady.
