Dzanga-Sangha

Dzanga-Sangha, often referred to simply as the Sanga region, is one of Central Africa’s great rainforest experiences. Dense forest, wildlife-rich clearings and river systems define the landscape, and the sense of remoteness is profound. This is a destination that asks you to slow down, listen and engage differently with wildlife than on open-plains safari.

Odzala

Odzala-Kokoua National Park is one of Africa’s most evocative rainforest wildernesses: immense, biodiverse and still genuinely remote. Its magic lies in contrast — dense forest and open bais, pirogue journeys and forest walks, gorilla tracking and quiet observation hides. The pace is more patient than on open-plains safari, but the sense of discovery is arguably even greater.

Reasons to Visit

Odzala-Kokoua National Park protects one of the largest and most intact areas of Congo Basin rainforest on earth, and with it a significant population of western lowland gorillas. Unlike their mountain cousins, western lowland gorillas inhabit dense equatorial forest, making habituation a long and painstaking process. The groups accessible at Odzala are among the most reliably encountered in the Congo Basin, and spending time with them in the green half-light of the forest floor is an experience with few parallels anywhere in Africa.
The Congo Basin has its own equivalent of the Big Five: western lowland gorilla, forest elephant, chimpanzee, bongo and African forest buffalo, five species that together represent the full depth of what this ecosystem contains. All five are present in Odzala, though the forest’s density means encounters require patience, skilled guides and a willingness to move slowly. Forest elephants, smaller and more secretive than their savanna relatives with straighter, downward-pointing tusks, are regularly drawn to the park’s forest clearings. The bongo, the largest of Africa’s forest antelopes, is among the most sought-after and least-seen large mammals on the continent.
The baïs of Odzala are natural forest clearings where mineral-rich soil draws wildlife from the surrounding forest at predictable intervals throughout the day. Sitting quietly on an elevated platform as the light changes and animals begin to emerge from the treeline — a forest elephant moving into the open, a group of gorillas arriving at the edge of the clearing, sitatunga wading through shallow water — is one of the defining experiences of Congo Basin safari. It requires stillness and time, and rewards both in equal measure.

Loango National Park

Loango is Gabon’s star attraction and one of Africa’s most original wildlife destinations. Here, surf beaches, lagoons, forest and savanna sit side by side, creating a setting where a day may include beach walks, boat excursions, forest-edge wildlife and marine encounters. It is one of the rare places on the continent where the phrase “where the forest meets the sea” feels completely literal.

Lope National Park

Lopé is one of Central Africa’s most important ecological transition zones, where rainforest opens into pockets of savanna and the Ogooué River adds both movement and beauty to the landscape. It is a more cerebral destination than headline-driven safari, rewarding travellers interested in primates, birds, botany and the scientific richness of a forest-savanna mosaic.
